What Constitutes a Highly Effective Learning Environment?

by Chad Smith EdD on January 17, 2017 in Classroom Engagement

Effective learning environments take quite some time to establish. They don’t happen overnight, but once they’re formed, students will get more out of each lesson than you could have ever imagined. Each effective classroom runs differently, but most stack their success against a few telling characteristics. You’ll find a sample of what to look for in your own classroom below.

Various Learning Models Present

Teaching is not one size fits all. In highly effective learning environments, a multitude of learning models are present within the classroom. This type of variation helps teach the same subject matter in very different ways. One of those ways is sure to resonate with a handful of students while a completely different style hit home for another group. When you incorporate learning styles for everyone, your lessons became that much more effective

Personalized Learning

To springboard off of the first question, teachers creating effective learning environments also take adjusted learning models a step further. Their secret is personalized learning. Each student has a choice of what they want from the learn – within reason. Our choice is empowering for students, because they feel much more in charge of their education

Question Centered

Finally, effective learning environments are made by asking questions. This teaches the kids to value unique, thought provoking questions just as much, if not more, than the answer itself. Questions play a part in sparking the imagination, increasing curiosity, and achieving goals.
All learning environments should be as effective as they possibly can be. It takes hard work and dedication to bring this type of classroom to life, but the long-term results are profound for our students.
